Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: When will the project begin?
A: Planning has occurred for several months. Actual physical work will begin on June 13, 2017.
Newaygo Phasing Plan - Updated
Q: When will students move locations?
A: Students will occupy the same areas in both the Vera Wilsie building and the Velma Matson building during the 2016-2017 school year. No grade levels will move until the 2017-2018 school year per the phasing plan.
Q: I heard that some of the "old" portions of the Velma Matson may be reused in the new construction. Is that true?
A: When renovating and building the new structure, when possible, items like the cupola and other brick features can be used in the new facility if they are in good condition. One must remember that with a building constructed in 1926, we won't know what is able to be reused until we get further into the project.
Q: I went to that school in the past. What do I do if I want a piece of history from that building like a brick or another item?
A: Public School districts cannot give away school items for free. When the time comes, items that are not reused in the new/renovated construction, will most likely be placed on a public auction site.
Q: I went to that school in the past and I'd like to tour the building and take pictures.
A: An Open House is scheduled for June 11, 2017 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Q. Since we currently have two elementary schools (Vera Wilsie building and Velma Matson building), and plan to combine into one K-4 elementary school, what will be the name of the new/renovated elementary building?
A: This has not been decided. The school board will have to determine a process for assigning a name to the new building.
